Birding

The Masai Mara might be famous for its abundant megafauna and wonder of the great migration, but with over 500 species of birds recorded in the region, it is difficult to ignore this abundant and fascinating group of animals during your stay at Encounter Mara.

All of our guides are extremely knowledgeable in the birdlife of the Masai Mara ecosystem. Whether guests are keen and experienced birders or are completely uninterested in this aspect of a safari, our guides are experienced in gauging levels of interest and adjusting the manner in which birds are explored during an Encounter Mara stay.

Some of the most prominent species, such as the Common Ostrich, Ground Hornbill, and Secretarybird, will be sure to catch your eye as they strut across the grasslands. Birds of prey including the Bateleur, Martial and Tawny Eagles soar majestically overhead as they stake their claims in the great African skies. And if you are looking for a splash of color, look no further than the diverse display of Starlings, Rollers, Kingfishers and Bee-eaters that call the conservancy their home. One of the most interesting birds that resident in Naboisho is the Greater Honeyguide. If you’re lucky enough to stumble upon this bird, your guide will demonstrate to you how it is used to locate honey in the Maasai Culture.

For the more serious birdwatchers that come searching for long lists and rare, unique species, our camp’s location will not disappoint. The conservancy is one of a few places in Kenya that harbors the Long-tailed Shrike and the Usambiro Barbet. It is also one of the only places in the Masai Mara ecosystem with Von Der Decken’s Hornbill, Pygmy Falcon, and White-Headed Buffalo-Weaver. Other uncommon species found within the conservancy include reliable sightings of Bush Pipit, and during the right season you might be lucky enough to see a male breeding-plumaged Pennant-Winged Nightjar fluttering overhead.
